Exciting changes are taking place at ACE (Adult and Community Education) offered in Collier County. This is my 10th year offering local workshops at Barron Collier High School and I'm delighted to now offer 1-night sessions called "Writing Craft" classes. I have four lined up during November and December. I'm also offering several NEW classes. Check out these offerings and sign up soon! Don't forget that pre-registration is now required.

Collier County Adult and Community Education--Fall 1 session
Barron Collier High School (Cougar Drive & Airport-Pulling, Naples)

MONDAYS: 3:30-5:30 p.m.  MEETING DATES:  Oct. 28, Nov. 4, 18, Dec. 2, 9, & 16 (no class Nov. 11 & 25)
Focus on Your Book Project Learn the 4 stages in the book-writing process and then get started on your own book idea. The class is broken down to cover all the stages but focus on the first two: the development & planning, and drafting. Considerations for both fiction and nonfiction projects are covered. Students will have time to share excerpts for feedback during class. (6 weeks, $79)

MONDAYS: 6:30-8:30 p.m.  MEETING DATES:  Oct. 28, Nov. 4, 18, Dec. 2, 9, & 16 (no class Nov. 11 & 25)
NEW Self-Publishing Part II:  Hands-On Details  After a quick overview of the choices and steps involved in self-publishing, we'll put that knowledge to work in exploring sites and taking the next step. We'll cover design and formatting Word documents to convert, create, and publish. Then we'll explore sites and options to promote ebooks or print-on-demand (POD) projects. Students will bring their manuscript or an excerpt to work with each week so they understand the steps in the process.   (6 weeks, $87)

TUESDAYS: 6:30-8:30 p.m.  MEETING DATES:  Oct. 29, Nov. 5, 12, 19
NEW Writing Short Stories Do you enjoy reading short stories? Would you like to write fiction but don’t have time to devote to a novel? Write a short story! In this class, designed for beginners or anyone wishing to explore short stories, participants will learn from published examples while applying short fiction techniques to their own writing. Through hands-on writing exercises they will harness ideas and write a short story in three stages. We’ll explore conflict, characterization, viewpoint, and description as they contribute to plot. Tips on using viewpoint and sensory detail to engage readers, as well as story length and structure will be covered. (4 weeks, $77)

THURSDAYS:  3:30-5:30 p.m. MEETING DATES:  Nov. 7, 14, 21, Dec. 5, 12, 19 (No class Nov. 28)
NEW Revision Decisions  The real work of writing happens during the revision stage in the writing process. Revision is not editing; it’s time to rethink pacing and development to ensure that the author is sharing his or her story (for fiction) or knowledge (for nonfiction) in the best possible way to impact the reader. In this combination class and intensive workshop,  participants will use a variety of revision techniques, complete in-class exercises, and share both exercises and excerpts of manuscript revisions with the group for feedback. Students may work with the same manuscript or several different manuscripts during the 6-week course. (Note: These techniques may not work well with poetry.) Bring a short 2-page writing sample to the first class. (6 weeks, $87)

THURSDAYS:  6:30-8:30 p.m. MEETING DATES: Nov. 14, 21, Dec. 5, 12 (No class Nov. 28)
NEW Using Microsoft Word for Writers  This hands-on workshop covers the Microsoft Word features writers need to know. Creating and using templates (for short stories/articles or books). Formatting margins, inserting headers and page numbering, turning off first page header and numbering, and formatting for double-spacing.  We’ll reformat a document you have already created to adhere to “special editorial instructions” and also learn how to use Track Changes for editing. Tips on using add-ons such as One Note or Epub creator plus saving to different formats such as PDF are covered.  Basic computer and word processing skills are required (i.e., know how to use a mouse, access MyComputer, save files). Students should bring a flash (thumb) drive to save work during the class. (4 weeks, $84)
