Summer Classes begin mid-June

Upcoming writing classes in #Naples run mid-June through the end of July 2016. If you're in the area, be sure to sign up soon. I'm pleased that this summer I get to offer 3- and 5-week classes in addition to the usual 4- and 6-week classes.
PLEASE NOTE: Costs are based on the number of classes meetings. Also, the ACE program has moved to Lorenzo Walker Technical College off Esty Avenue in East Naples for summer only. (They will return to Barron Collier HS in the fall.) 


Reading with a Writer’s Eye
Mondays 4:30-6 p.m.    Naples | Lorenzo Walker Technical College
June 13, 20, 27, July 6, July 13, 2016 (no class July 4) – 5 weeks

Learn from published authors as we read and discuss a variety of stories (as well as movies and TV shows) from an a
uthor’s perspective. We’ll focus on character and plot development, creating scenes through action and dialogue and how to apply it all to our own writing. Click to register.

June 14, 21, 28, 2016 – 3 weeks

Get started on your story with these important elements. Through writing exercises learn to engage readers by crafting 3-dimensional characters then creating an exciting plot with a realistic point-of-view. Creative Connections

June 14, 21, 28, July 5, 2016 – 4 weeks

Unlock your imagination with fun activities to generate ideas and maintain writing motivation. Explore how creativity works and how to use art as a creative warm-up. Projects include  plot trees, timelines, character collage, and creating pin boards for story setting plus useful writing prompts to keep the creative juices flowing. Click to register.
   
Self-Editing for Writers 
Wednesdays  4:30-6:00 p.m.  Naples | Lorenzo Walker Technical College
June 15, 22, 29, July 6, 2016 – 4 weeks

Cost: $44
Whether writing fiction or business communication, your sentences and paragraphs need to be clear and concise. Identifying errors in our own writing is hard, but by following 8 simple principles, you will be able to polish your prose while having fun brushing up on grammar and punctuation basics. Click to register.
    
Guided Revision 
Wednesdays, 6:30-8 p.m. Naples | Lorenzo Walker Technical College 
June 15, 22, 29, July 6, 13, 20, 2016 – 6 weeks
Cost: $64
Making time to improve your writing is important. This workshop allows writers to receive feedback and guidance on their works-in-progress–poems, short stories, memoir, novels, or articles. Learn as we discuss what works and what needs reworking. Time and length limit to excerpts are dependent on group size. Click to register.
    
Writing Craft Series  
Thursdays, 1:30-3 p.m.Naples | Renaissance Academy (5th Ave&10th St)
June 16, 23, 30 – 3 weeks (OR take each individually)  
Cost: series $55 member/$70 non-member

Participants may register for the entire series or for any of the individual lectures below. Dramatically improve your writing skills with this series of workshops and in-class writing exercises. The series will focus on the most important elements of character development, plot, and dialogue.

Writing Craft: Character Development (1 week – June 16, 2016)
Cost: $25 member / $30 non-member

Having trouble creating characters that the reader believes could be a real person? In this craft class, we will focus on how to turn cardboard characters into well-rounded personalities that will engage readers. Participants will also learn how to incorporate the essential parts into the story or novel. Students will complete several in-class exercises with time to share and discuss for improvement. 

Writing Craft: Plot (1 week – June 23, 2016)
Cost: $25 member / $30 non-member

In this craft class, we will complete several fun in-class activities to demonstrate how to add intriguing plot twists and turns to a story or novel. We will discuss story arc and pacing plus the essential details for plotting: character motivation/desire, action, and temporary resolutions. Time is allotted to share in-class writing for feedback and discussion. All writing levels welcome. 

Writing Craft: Dialogue (1 week – June 30, 2016)
Cost: $25 member / $30 non-member

In this craft class, we will focus on how to properly punctuate and format dialogue, use it to craft scenes that show rather than tell, and use it to provide story and character background. Balancing dialogue with narrative, incorporating actions and thoughts while maintaining viewpoint will be covered. Students will complete several in-class exercises with time to share and discuss for improvements. All writing levels welcome. 

Writing Nonfiction 
Thursdays, 10 a.m. -noon    Naples | Lorenzo Walker Technical College 
June 16, 23, 30, July 7, 14, 21, 2016 – 6 weeks
Cost: $89

Interested in writing articles? Nonfiction is a great way to break into print! Learn to craft clear, concise copy – for magazines, ads, brochures, or websites. This class will cover different types of nonfiction, guiding students from developing ideas and narrowing focus to pitching to magazines/websites and targeting appropriate audience. Click to register.
 
Story Elements: Dialogue, Scene, Theme

July 5, 12, 19, 2016 – 3 weeks
Cost: $44

Focus on specific story elements in this short course perfect for all writing levels. Engage readers using dialogue, action, and setting to establish strong scenes and then deepen the story by considering story theme. We’ll explore options for each writing element and share in-class writing to learn from each other. Click to register.
 
Marketing for Writers 
Thursdays, 1:30-3:30 p.m.  Naples|Renaissance Acad. (5th Ave&10th St)
July 7, 14, 21, 18 – 4 weeks
Cost: $75 member / $90 non-member

Have you finished your manuscript? Hope to pitch your idea to editors? Now you're ready to embark on a new writer's journey – overcoming all the hurdles of getting published. In this course, we will explore how to find and select markets and then pitch manuscripts to editors. We'll work on crafting strong submission letters, learn the difference between proposals and query letters, publishing terms, and the details of basic contracts.
